On the occasion of World Photography Day (19 August), we remember the visionaries who enriched this field with their creativity. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765–1833), a French scientist and inventor, is regarded as the world’s first photographer. In 1826–27, he captured the world’s first permanent photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, using a process he developed called Heliography, thereby laying the foundation of photography. His life and contribution were later highlighted in the English film The Naked Eye (1956).
Decades afterward, Founder of World Photography Day” George Eastman (1854–1932), founder of Kodak and inventor of the film roll, revolutionized photography by making it simple and accessible to the masses with his famous idea: “You press the button, we do the rest.” Though some modern listings mistakenly describe Niépce as a “producer,” he was not a film producer, but remains celebrated as the true pioneer of photography.

Ashvin Borad’s transition from shutter cameras to mirrorless systems became a turning point in his career, allowing him to explore cinematic photography and filmmaking with greater depth. Today, his work goes beyond still images, creating dynamic visual narratives that showcase his versatile artistic vision.
In this long journey of photography, the contribution of artists like Ashvin Borad is invaluable. For him, photography is not just pressing a camera button — it is about weaving emotions, stories, and life into every frame. Starting his journey in the optical era, where patience and mastery over light and shadow were essential, Ashvin sharpened his artistic vision. With the arrival of digital technology, he embraced change, experimenting with new styles and expanding his creative reach.
Bollywood & Television Collaborations
Ashvin Borad’s creative journey has also brought him close to Bollywood and beyond. He has captured iconic moments with legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jeetendra, Shah Rukh Khan, Suniel Shetty, Rishi Kapoor, Aditya Pancholi, Vivek Oberoi, Arbaaz Khan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Aruna Irani, Sushama Shiromanee, Rati Agnihotri, Padmini Kolhapure, Poonam Dhillon, Preeti Jhangiani, Sonakshi Sinha, Kajol, Karishma Kapoor, Milind Gunaji, Yashpal Sharma, Mugdha Godse, Varsha Usgaonkar, Kishori Shahane, Akshay Anand, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anupam Kher, Gufi Paintal, and Ranjeet Bedi.
He has also collaborated with acclaimed directors such as Kuku Kohli, Tinu Suresh Desai, Pan Nalin, Rahul Rawail, Daivata Patil, and Deepak Patil. Over the past 18+ years, Ashvin Borad has photographed some of the most iconic faces in Bollywood — and more. His work also extends to major television projects including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs (2006), Kaun Banega Crorepati? (2000), and Dance India Dance Super Moms (2013).

Cinematic Camera Legacy
From 2001 to 2025, I have worked extensively with some of the most iconic and industry-standard film and digital cinema cameras. My journey began with the Arriflex 435, a 35mm high-speed camera known for its versatility and reliability, followed by the Arri BL (235/535 BL series), widely recognized for its blimped design ideal for sync-sound 35mm film production. As the industry transitioned to digital, I embraced the RED EPIC (5K) and continued with the RED DRAGON (6K), the RED WEAPON with Helium 8K S35 and Monstro 8K VV sensors, and the RED HELIUM 8K S35, which received an Academy Award for its groundbreaking imaging technology. Parallelly, I gained hands-on experience with the ARRI ALEXA lineup, starting from the Classic / Plus, the ALEXA XT / SXT / SXT Plus with their enhanced dynamic range and RAW workflow, and the ALEXA Mini / Mini LF, lightweight yet powerful full-frame versions. Additionally, I have also worked with the Canon C300, expanding my versatility across both film and digital formats.

Wedding Camera Legacy
In the wedding industry, I have gained extensive experience working with cameras from Nikon, Canon, and Sony. The Nikon D90, released in 2008, became one of the most popular wedding cameras of its time, being among the first DSLRs capable of recording Full HD video. Over the years, I have also worked with other reliable Nikon models such as the D750, D850, D70s, and D7200, which have all been trusted choices for wedding photography. On the Canon side, the EOS 5D Mark III, launched in 2012, earned a reputation as an iconic DSLR for weddings, while the Canon R series introduced the advantages of mirrorless technology to the industry. Similarly, Sony’s A7 and A7R, released in 2013, marked the beginning of the mirrorless era, bringing a new level of innovation and quality to wedding photography.

Work with Government & VVIP Events
Alongside the film and television industry, Ashvin has worked with eminent personalities from the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, including Sanjay Jaju, as well as political leaders such as Devendra Fadnavis (Chief Minister of Maharashtra) and Ashish Shelar (Cultural Affairs Ministry), in connection with the Maharashtra State Film Awards. He is grateful for the privilege of VVIP entry and the opportunity to capture memorable photographs at such prestigious occasions.

Wedding Photography & Mentorship
In his wedding photography journey, Ashvin has been fortunate to receive support and guidance from many respected personalities, including Dinesh Babariya (Parth), Anil Movaliya (Pavan Lab), Mitul Moradiya (Photo Art), Chandresh Suatriya (Star), Nitesh (Mansi), Praful Korat, Chirag Hirani (Shreeji), Arvind Khushi, Raj (Konica), Paresh Gondaliya Das (Krishna), and Piyush Kaswala (Paradise).
Along with their encouragement, he has also been actively associated as a member of the Surat Photographic Welfare Association and the Varachha Photographer Association in Surat, which has further enriched his professional growth and connections in the field of photography.

Film Industry Support & Background
In the film industry, his greatest supporters have been Atul Patel (Pomson Pictures), Jashwant Gangani ,Raj Gangani ,(Gangani Motion Pictures), and Ganesh Vaghani, whose guidance has been invaluable to his career.
Born in the humble village of Tori, Amreli, Gujarat, India, Ashvin Borad has become a respected name in Indian cinema, known for his creative vision, photographic mastery, and digital insight. His journey from the spiritual heartland of Saurashtra to the spotlight of Mumbai’s entertainment industry is a powerful story of devotion, perseverance, and passion for cinema.
With no formal training in photography or film, Ashvin began his career in Surat in the late 1990s, eventually making a name for himself in Mumbai as a still photographer, line producer, and digital strategist. He entered the film industry in 1998, first assisting on sets and gradually building a multifaceted career behind the camera.
Philosophy of Photography
For Ashvin, light was not just illumination it became direction. The lens was not just a tool it became his vision. And cinema, more than just entertainment, became his soul’s language. His calm demeanor, humble approach, and dedication to his craft have earned him deep respect across media and film circles.
As technology continues to advance, artists like Ashvin Borad who embrace change while nurturing creativity will keep shaping the future of photography and filmmaking in innovative ways.
