Five times a hair designer helped Ranveer Singh to 'become' a character

Five times a hair designer helped Ranveer Singh to ‘become’ a character

Ranveer Singh has played a boggling number of remarkably distinct characters in his career and one man who has helped him transform into Kapil Dev, Bajirao, Allauddin Khilji, the impetuous desi Romeo in 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' and the meek Jayeshbhai is none other than Darshan Yewalekar. Off screen too, Darshan has helped Ranveer to stand out on red carpets and on magazine covers with messy buns, wavy spikes and double ponytails. Here are five examples of this one- of- a -kind collaboration that has helped Ranveer to sport head-turning hairstyles.

83

When the first look of the 2021 sports drama, '83' released, fans of Bollywood and cricket were equally taken aback by Ranveer’s uncanny resemblance to the former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev. Since the character had a living reference point, Darshan studied the legendary cricketer's moustache microscopically to get each strand in place and focused on perfecting the waves and the curls that the Haryana Hurricane sported with such elan. The result was sheer, jaw-dropping magic on the big screen.

Padmaavat

Ranveer’s character Alauddin Khilji, in the 2019 film, 'Padmaavat', was challenging for Darshan as he had to design the hair exactly the way director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had envisioned. In the end the long flowing hair and the unkempt beard lent Ranveer an aura of unbridled power, danger and tyranny. This became one of the most memorable roles of Ranveer's career.

This 2013 adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' incidentally was the first time that Darshan and Ranveer collaborated. Ranveer’s character was that of a lover, a rebel who had to express emotions of rage as well as deep, abiding passion. The actor’s side parting, casual and slightly messy hair conveyed his free-spirited approach to life and love and lent him a certain vulnerability while the beard added a slight hint of menace.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar

The ‘Jayesh’ look had to portray the protagonist's peace-loving, timid, yet courageous character. Darshan introduced a Chaplinesque moustache, carefully combed hair with a side-parting that instantly transformed Ranveer into a small town family man weighed down by his responsibilities as a dutiful son and a caring husband and father. The hair that fell on his forehead conveyed the repressed fun element of the character.

Bajirao Mastani

To play a Maratha warrior who goes through many physical and emotional changes through the film was not easy but Darshan and Ranveer agreed to commit totally to the role. Ranveer's hair was shaved and the most challenging part was that continuity had to be maintained during the long shoot. The handlebar moustache he sported also helped Ranveer to exude the aura of a brave Maratha.
