Director and creative producer, Mitu has been making beautiful stories on the matriarchs of our life. Her YouTube channel Positive Thinkerz has produced hit shows such as Smitasha and Ssup Maa which highlight mother-daughter relationships. With Mother’s Day round the corner, these are the kinds of content one wants to watch. Mitu talks more about it.
“Mother-daughter relationship is one that has the power to stand the test of time. We can see it emotionally or we can see it with a touch of humour. We took the second route to see this relationship, a tongue in cheek manner. The take we have taken in these stories is that not only do mothers teach their daughters but also learn from them. We had fun writing as well as making it. With Smita (Bansal; actor) the added advantage was that we dealt with real mother-daughters. So it was good fun to see them interact with each other. Especially, how Smita slid beautifully from co-star to mother and back to a co-star,” she says.
It was a conscious decision on Mitu’s part to choose real-life mothers for both the shows. Hence, Smita came in for Smitasha and Maninee De was roped in for Ssup Maa. “They are new-age mothers and are open-minded to collaborate on such content, and are also ready to play along,” she adds.
Mitu also reveals that some parts of these stories draw reference from her personal life. “Some of the episodes are actually things mom has done with me like the episode on photographs, on the other hand, the one with the online party is something that had happened between me and my daughter (Aryahi) . So yes, a lot of it is inspired and based on true events. I am happy to have a fun relationship with my mom that ended up inspiring a lot of these episodes that both Maninee and Smita have performed beautifully. I would also like to thank Smita for being such a sport, I am grateful she did it so well. In fact when Stasha (Smita’s eldest daughter) left for London, she herself offered that Anaagha (Smita’s younger daughter) will do the series. Stasha is fun and Anaagha is so natural that I used to discuss it with Anagha and then write the next lot of episodes,” she shares.
Not just her relationship with her mother, but her bonding with her daughter (Aryahi) also helped Mitu pen the stories. “ She is a spitfire and comes up with awesome one-liners. She has really make me laugh out loud at times. She spews out gems that I use in my scripts to add a lot of flavour to them. She has made me a mom and enriched my life,” she adds.
The content on mother-daughter is evergreen, be it soaps, films or OTT. “We learn from our moms, then resist what they have taught us in a phase called adolescence and then as we grow up we realize that they were right and before we know it, we become moms ourselves. The mother-daughter relationship might be a roller-coaster ride but it is tied by the rope of emotions and nothing can break it. It's a sacred bond,” she ends with a smile.
