Rajinikanth is making a grand comeback, and he’s already breaking records even before his new film, Coolie, has hit theaters. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, this Tamil action entertainer has set a new standard in North America, surpassing the long-held premiere day record of Kabali (2016).
Back in 2016, Kabali brought in about USD 1.9 million from its premiere shows, a figure that stood unbeaten among Tamil films for nearly ten years. But Coolie has easily blown past that milestone, raking in over USD 2.15 million in advance bookings— and there are still two days left before its release.
In the US alone, the film has sold nearly 75,000 tickets across more than 1,725 shows in 522 locations, generating over USD 1.85 million. Both its Tamil and Telugu versions are showing impressive momentum, each contributing around USD 100K in a single day’s surge. And with AMC Cinemas yet to announce all showtimes, those numbers are likely to keep climbing.
On a global scale, Coolie’s advance sales have already surpassed Rs 85 crore for the opening weekend, with about Rs 50 crore of that coming from international markets. Its first-day pre-bookings have also exceeded Rs 60 crore worldwide, setting the stage for a career-best opening for Rajinikanth.

With its release scheduled for August 14, 2025, Coolie isn’t just gearing up to be a blockbuster—it’s already making history before the first ticket is even sold.
