Mumbai – Within the last 24 hours, the Central Government banned 18 OTT apps, 19 websites and 10 applications across India. After the order, all these websites and applications including OTT platforms will not be able to provide their services in India. But the question arises that why did the government have to ban them? After all, what kind of content was being served on these platforms that orders had to be passed to forcefully shut them down. Responding to this, Information Technology Minister of the Government of India, Anurag Thakur said that the action to ban all these has been taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Minister Anurag Thakur has stressed the responsibility of these platforms for not circulating obscene and indecent content under the guise of ‘creative expression’. He told that they had been warned in the past too but no steps were taken by them and obscene content was continuously being broadcasted on them. Therefore, there was no other option left except closing them.
