Vedang Raina Steps Into the Imtiaz Ali Universe With Main Vaapas Aaunga, Brings Back the Era of  Heroes who yearn

Mumbai: There are moments in Hindi cinema when a new actor arrives with aplomb. With Main Vaapas Aaunga, Vedang Raina seems to be doing exactly that, stepping into a genre that was once defined by men who loved deeply and carried their memories like unfinished sentences.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film moves between timelines shaped by the Partition era, but at its emotional centre is Vedang’s portrayal of a young Punjabi boy in love. For decades, the Imtiaz Ali male protagonist has been the sincere, romantic yet wounded, often searching for meaning through love. These characters are learning who they are in the process.

Vedang’s entry into this space feels fitting. He is not playing the loud, angry lover common in contemporary romances. Instead, he brings vulnerability and hope.  One of the film’s most compelling narrative choices is casting Vedang as the younger version of Naseeruddin Shah, who is the heart of the film. This structure demands that the actor create a personality that can believably evolve into a lifetime of longing.

His scenes capture the fragile intensity of youth, the belief that love can survive borders and time.

Visually, Vedang’s transformation has drawn attention. As a pre-Partition Punjabi boy, he appears in simple traditional clothing, unstyled hair and innocence rather than constructed charm. The aesthetic feels deliberately unvarnished.

This look is crucial to the film’s atmosphere. It reinforces the idea of a love story unfolding in a world where gestures were emotions, that often remained unspoken. In this context, Vedang’s screen presence becomes a storytelling device, conveying both the immediacy of young romance and the shadow of inevitable loss.
Hindi cinema has periodically returned to the figure of the yearning man, the one popularises by a slew of Hollywood romances lately, especially the recent Bridgerton series. Main Vaapas Aaunga revisits this and Vedang’s performance could introduce it to a new generation of young viewers.
