Prem Chopra Remembers Sardar Singh Suri; Devotion and Service Mark His 7th Death Anniversary

Mumbai: The 7th death anniversary of Sardar Singh Suri, founder of the historic Four Bungalow Gurudwara Sahib, was observed with deep devotion and a spirit of service. Thousands of devotees gathered to offer shradhanjali through bhajan-kirtan, ardas, and a grand langar. Veteran actor Prem Chopra also paid an emotional tribute, remembering Suri with heartfelt words.

Prem Chopra said, “Sardar Singh Suri ji was not just a kind-hearted person, but someone who gave direction to many lives. I worked with him as a hero in my very first film, and that is something I will never forget.”

Sardar Singh Suri’s life stands as an inspiring example of struggle and selfless service. After migrating from Rawalpindi during Partition, he began his journey in Mumbai as a taxi driver, but his true calling became serving society. What started in 1967 as a modest 10×10 structure has today grown into a major center of faith and humanitarian work.

He also contributed to cinema by producing the Punjabi film “Aeh Dharti Punjab Di.” The film featured Prem Chopra, Jabeen Jalil, Nimmi, and Madan Puri, with music enriched by legendary voices like Mohammed Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor. The film received a total of nine awards, presented by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Prem Chopra, Jabeen Jalil, Mohammed Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Sardar Singh Suri, and lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri were among those honored. Ironically, due to financial constraints, Suri himself could not travel to Delhi to receive his award. The film was also declared tax-free at the time.

The Gurudwara continues to serve around 2,000 people daily through langar, with the number exceeding 5,000 on Sundays. In addition, the Guru Tegh Bahadur School provides education to hundreds of underprivileged children.

Sardar Singh Suri did not just build a Gurudwara - he created a legacy of service, equality, and humanity that continues to live on through every meal served and every life touched
