Nivedita Basu: It is not necessary to have voyeurism and crime to make content work

Nivedita Basu, VP Content and Business Alliance, Atrangii TV and OTT, says that while there is a lot of talk of violence and brutality in films and shows today, she says that this has always been there and one should treat these sequences as part of the storyline and not think too much about them.

“I think the advent of OTT in India started with a lot of violence and voyeurism. Films, of course, had it from the past 20 years. But for somebody like me, who watches OTT with the intent of just enjoying myself, don’t really get affected by this. It is just a form of entertainment for me. It is there to entertain you. Maybe it goes extreme at times, but some people enjoy it. There are times when it's not done in totality, and people judge that the makers didn't show anything and they feel that it was much worse in real life,” she says.

She adds, “I think violence action and crime subjects did dominate three years back but look at shows like TVF, I mean, now the content has opened up. It is not necessary to have voyeurism and crime to make content work. I love rom coms. I watch most of them. It's not just Indian content. I watch content in all languages. I think today there are many genres and it's not just crime and abusive language that attracts people to watch this type of content. They like to watch shows like Panchayat or a show like Gullak as well. So, there is a lot to watch and the times have changed maybe five years back when the topic OTT started and the shows were dominating but not anymore.”

Meanwhile, she adds that the audience loves to watch true stories on screen. “The audience likes real and inspired stories because they are curious to know what happened. They might have heard about an incident, and they are interested to know more. The way it is depicted in the film may be interesting to them as well. The moment you say it's a true story, or inspired by a true story, whether it is crime on OTT or in films, they are interested in it rather than a fiction story, even if it has a lot of crime,” she says.
