Cannes, France | May 2026: Indian independent cinema received a proud global moment at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2026 as acclaimed filmmaker Kumar Raj and Sonam attended the festival on a special invitation, earning admiration from international filmmakers, critics, and cultural delegates.
At a special screening held during the festival, Kumar Raj’s acclaimed women-centric film Ameena received an emotional standing ovation and widespread appreciation from audiences and critics alike. The film, which successfully completed an extraordinary two-year theatrical run across India, was praised for its powerful storytelling, emotional depth, cultural authenticity, and sensitive portrayal of women and human relationships.
Based on the celebrated stage play by Aftab Hasnain, the film’s screenplay and cinematic adaptation were written by Dr. Prof. Kishan Pawar, whose emotionally rich writing added realism and literary depth to the narrative.

Lead actress Rekha Rana, who portrayed three distinct roles in the film, was also specially invited to Cannes in recognition of her widely appreciated performance. However, she could not attend due to her ongoing spiritual and humanitarian commitments associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses organisation.
Meanwhile, Kumar Raj’s other acclaimed project Tara has also gained international recognition with official selection and award honours at the upcoming France USA International Film Festival 2026 in Cannes.
