Saanand Verma, best known for his popular role in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain and his work in projects like Aakhon Ki Gustakhiyan and First Copy, is just as passionate about his role as a citizen as he is about his on-screen characters. This Independence Day, he shares a heartfelt message about genuine patriotism and the importance of remembering the sacrifices that gave India its freedom.
“My message is simple — just like we love our mothers from the heart, just like we love our loved ones from the heart, we must also love our country from the heart,” Saanand says. “It’s important to truly understand our freedom struggle and freedom fighters, to respect them, and to value what they fought for. So say Bharat Mata Ki Jai, say Vande Mataram, say Jai Hind, say Hindustan Zindabad — say whatever you want, but say it from the heart.”
For Saanand, Subhas Chandra Bose stands as the most inspiring figure in India’s freedom movement. “He was extraordinary. The way he formed the Azad Hind Fauj, went abroad, and shook the British — it was incredible. He fought with such strength and determination that, for me, he’s number one in the list of India’s greatest freedom fighters.”

Mar 7, 2026While he admires the patriotic spirit, Saanand feels it has become too symbolic today. “The sincerity has faded,” he reflects. “That’s why I suggest that photos of freedom fighters should always be displayed — not just Gandhi ji, who everyone knows because he’s on the currency, but also Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, and SubhasH Chandra Bose. People must know their names and stories — only then will true patriotism grow.”
He further adds that Independence Day celebrations should go beyond flag-hoisting. “Whenever we hoist the flag, whether it’s a small event or a big one, there should always be a large photograph of at least one freedom fighter. Today’s generation must understand the struggles and sacrifices that gave us this freedom. Just hoisting the flag is not enough. The credit for our freedom must be reinforced in people’s minds. We are free today because of their courage and sacrifice — and that must always be acknowledged and respected.”
