Kamal Haasan's latest big-budget action flick, Thug Life, is struggling to keep its head above water

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s highly awaited gangster film, Thug Life, is experiencing a significant decline at the box office. After a fairly solid opening on Thursday, the movie took a steep plunge in earnings by Monday, raking in only about ₹2.25 crore across India on its fifth day — a staggering drop of nearly 85% compared to its first day.

Here’s how the numbers stack up:

Thursday – ₹17.00 crore

So, what went wrong?

Even though it was one of the most technically impressive films of the year—thanks to AR Rahman's captivating score, Ravi Varman's stunning cinematography, and a stylish cast that includes Trisha, STR, and Joju George—Thug Life just didn’t resonate with viewers. The excitement that everyone anticipated from a Kamal-Mani collaboration fizzled out by the second day, as mixed reviews and audience fatigue over high-concept, low-emotion storytelling began to set in.

The issue isn’t about the scale; it’s about the heart. Audiences entered the theater hoping for a gripping gangster drama but were instead greeted with a wandering plot, a lack of urgency, and characters that felt a bit disconnected. What should have been a tight, gritty story ended up being a slow burn that extinguished far too quickly.

The Bright Side (Sort Of)
The only silver lining? The producers had already locked in some solid non-theatrical deals — digital, satellite, and music rights reportedly helped them recoup the production costs. But when your theatrical run, featuring a superstar and a legendary director, ends up with less than ₹100 crore globally, it’s tough not to view it as a missed chance.

On the other hand, Indian 2 — Kamal’s other release in 2025 — might not have wowed the critics, but it at least had a stronger opening and managed to stick around longer. Sadly, Thug Life looks like it’s destined to be just another stylish yet forgettable box office flop.

Final Thoughts

This wasn’t just another film for Tamil cinema; it was supposed to be a big deal. Unfortunately, the disappointing numbers on Monday have pretty much determined its fate — Thug Life might not even come close to meeting the high expectations set for it.

For now, both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam will need to seriously reflect on what went wrong. After all, even legends can sometimes misjudge the vibe.

Thug Life is still showing in select theaters across India. If you’ve seen it, what do you think? Is it a misunderstood gem or just an overhyped flop?
