Astrologer Rinhee Suberwal shares the significance of Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri comes with a lot of spiritual significance, says astrologer Rinhee Suberwal, who is also a choreographer as well as a past life regression therapist, vaastu consultant, numerologist and crystal healer. She adds that the importance of the festival needs to be understood in its entirety before it is celebrated.

“Mahashivratri holds a lot of significance, but before that, we need to understand why Shivratri is celebrated. Mahashivratri is mainly celebrated as the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. And it also celebrates the selfless act of Lord Shiva drinking poison to save humanity and the universe. On this day, Lord Shiva performed the Anand Tandav, showing that he is the ultimate solution to everything. He is the one who sees all—past, present, and future. He is Mahakaal, the eternal force beyond time. His worship and devotion bring well-being to everyone. That is something we all know,” he says.

Talking about how Mahashivratri relates to planetary positions or cosmic events, she says, “Lord Shiva has a crescent moon on his head, which is a half-moon. Now, if we connect this to astrology, it becomes very significant. People who have planetary doshas like Rahu-Ketu dosh, Pitru dosh, or Mangal dosh can benefit greatly from performing Rudrabhishek on this day. The effects of Rudrabhishek on Mahashivratri are very powerful and bring positive changes in our lives. That’s why it is highly recommended to perform this ritual on Mahashivratri. It is also considered the best day to seek relief from any planetary doshas.”

Talking about how the festival is relevant today, she says, “In today’s world, where competition is increasing, people often try to imitate and pull each other down. In such times, having mental peace and stability is extremely important. Many times, in moments of emotional stress, people make impulsive decisions. Some even experience suicidal thoughts, and unfortunately, some go as far as committing suicide. This happens because their mental state is disturbed, and they believe that ending their life will free them from their problems. But in reality, it only leads to more suffering.”

She adds, “According to spiritual beliefs, a person who takes their own life does not find peace. Instead, they remain stuck in the spirit realm (preta yoni) for the remaining years they were supposed to live. For example, if someone was destined to live 100 years but dies by suicide at 25, their soul wanders for the remaining 75 years in immense pain, unable to attain peace. So, how can we protect ourselves from such negative thoughts? The first step is to strengthen the Moon in our astrological chart, as the Moon represents the mind and emotions. And what better day to stabilize the Moon than Mahashivratri? This day holds great astrological significance in bringing balance to the mind and soul.”

Sharing about what we can do on this day, she says, “To make the most of Mahashivratri’s energy, one should engage in acts of charity and devotion. Donating food, serving Brahmins, offering rice, milk, and performing Rudrabhishek with Panchamrit on a Shivling can help pacify negative planetary influences. These rituals bring positive energy and mental peace, making Mahashivratri a powerful day for spiritual and emotional healing. Many people observe fasting, while others meditate and chant the Om Namah Shivaya - Panchakshari mantra. This is considered very auspicious and helps bring peace in all aspects of life. The day of Shivratri is considered very auspicious for reducing the negative influences of any malefic planet.”
