Mumbai: India’s entertainment industry continues to produce big films, celebrity-driven events, and expensive web series, but behind that glamorous image, many workers are quietly dealing with financial instability.
A recent survey conducted by The Top India has revealed that a large number of people working in the entertainment sector are currently facing reduced work opportunities and major cuts in income. The survey was based on discussions with more than 1,000 professionals connected to film, television, and OTT productions.
According to several respondents, payments for projects have dropped sharply over the last few months. Many claimed they are now earning nearly 50 to 60 percent less than before, making it difficult to manage day-to-day expenses.

May 14, 2026The slowdown has particularly affected those who work behind the scenes. Assistant directors, makeup artists, camera crews, lightmen, editors, junior artists, production assistants, and equipment suppliers are among the people struggling the most.
Industry professionals say that work has become irregular. Earlier, many technicians could rely on back-to-back shoots throughout the year. Now, long waiting periods between projects have become common.
The financial pressure is especially visible in Mumbai, where most production houses and entertainment offices are located. Areas like Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra continue to remain expensive, with apartment rents touching nearly ₹50,000 even for modest spaces.

May 14, 2026For workers who depend entirely on freelance assignments, maintaining life in Mumbai has become increasingly difficult. Some have started taking smaller projects outside the entertainment field, while others are reportedly depending on savings to survive.
The findings published by The Top India show that the current slowdown is affecting far more people than audiences may realize. Behind every production is a large workforce whose livelihoods depend on regular shooting schedules and stable budgets.
While the entertainment world still shines on screen, many of the people helping create that world are currently facing serious uncertainty off screen.
