The weekend box office numbers for O’Romeo are finally in, and they tell a tale that’s both exciting and a bit tense. Featuring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri, and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, this action-romantic drama has wrapped up its first three days with an estimated worldwide gross of Rs 45 crore. Given the film’s grand scale and high expectations, its opening weekend has sparked quite a bit of chatter in trade circles.

Kicking off with Rs 7.75 crore on Friday, O’Romeo saw a solid boost on Saturday, raking in Rs 11.75 crore nett in India. It seems Valentine’s Day gave the film that extra romantic nudge, attracting couples and fans of heartfelt love stories to the theaters. However, Sunday brought a noticeable change. The film earned around Rs 8 crore nett on its third day, which is about a 30 percent drop from Saturday. A significant factor believed to have influenced Sunday’s turnout was the thrilling India vs Pakistan cricket match, which drew a large portion of the audience’s attention away from the cinemas.

Currently, O’Romeo’s box office collection in India is approximately Rs 27.50 crore nett, which translates to around Rs 33 crore gross domestically. The overseas markets added another USD 1.3 million, close to Rs 12 crore, bringing O’Romeo’s worldwide box office total to about Rs 45 crore for its opening weekend. While these figures are commendable, especially during a relatively quiet box office period, they are being viewed in light of the film’s reportedly high budget.

Trade analysts are pointing out that lighter romantic comedies are currently falling into a similar category, making comparisons hard to avoid. On the other hand, O’Romeo takes a different route, opting for a darker, more intense storytelling style with some thriller elements, which typically appeals to a more niche audience. This context means that while the opening isn’t a total flop, its financial success will largely hinge on how well it performs during the weekdays.

Now, all eyes are on the pivotal Monday test. If O’Romeo can maintain its footing and steer clear of a significant drop during the week, it might gradually gain traction through word of mouth. Shahid Kapoor’s previous performances indicate that his films often thrive with longer runs when the story resonates emotionally.
