Singer Rina Charaniya, known as Rii, reveals her profound passion for mountaineering, a love affair with nature that has been an integral part of her life from a young age. For Rii, the call of the mountains has always resonated deeply within her, and she cherishes her connection to the natural world.
As a child, Rii’s affinity for nature was evident in her daily activities, as she used to walk approximately 20 kilometers every day, relishing the experience of being immersed in the great outdoors. Her fascination with mountains and the allure of scaling them were ignited by the awe-inspiring achievements of mountaineering icons like Nimsdai and Mingma David Sherpa. Their feats served as a wellspring of inspiration for Rii, eventually becoming one of her life’s foremost aspirations.
Reflecting on her inaugural mountaineering expedition, she recounts her journey to Nepal in April, where she joined a group led by Nimsdai (Nirmal Purja). This expedition was pivotal in her pursuit of mountain climbing. The trek to the Everest base camp, which spanned seven arduous days, pushed her physical and mental boundaries. Despite the challenges, Rii found the experience to be profoundly rewarding. During her stay at the base camp, she immersed herself in the training, which included practicing climbing on a section of the Khumbu icefall.
Recently, Rii achieved another remarkable milestone by conquering Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest peak in Africa. Her mountaineering ambitions extend beyond individual summits, as she aspires to conquer the Seven Summits— the highest peaks on each continent. Kilimanjaro marked her fourth conquest on this challenging journey.

Expeditions like these, where Rii endures nine days without a proper shower, home-cooked meals, or comfortable sleep, offer profound lessons and a newfound appreciation for life’s everyday comforts.
