Sinha shared that he first came up with the idea for Ra.One back in 2005 and started writing it the next year. However, it wasn't until Shah Rukh Khan announced the film at a press event in Berlin that things really kicked off. Sinha recalled being bombarded with calls for eight straight hours, unable to confirm the news. When he finally got in touch with Khan, the actor simply said, "Why hide it?"

The Production Journey of Ra.One

Sinha admitted that Ra.One didn't turn out the way he had hoped. Even with a hefty budget of around ₹90-120 crore, he felt overwhelmed by the project's vastness. "I lost control of the film," he admitted. The director spent up to 18 hours a day working alongside Khan, an Italian cinematographer, and an American VFX supervisor. He praised Khan's intelligence and diplomatic nature, which helped him feel supported rather than overshadowed.

The Struggles of Ra.One

Reflecting on the film's box office results, Sinha took full responsibility. He recognized that the script and editing had significant issues, and while he still believed in the core narrative, trying to please everyone ultimately backfired. The only elements he felt were done right were the music and visual effects.

The Negative Buzz Around Ra.One

Despite the film's ambitious vision and the star power of Shah Rukh Khan, Ra.One faced a barrage of criticism upon its release. Sinha noted that the negative buzz surrounding the film began even before its premiere, fueled by high expectations and the extensive marketing campaign that preceded it. The director acknowledged that the film's ambitious scope led to a disconnect with audiences, who found it difficult to relate to the characters and the storyline. Sinha reflected on how the film's heavy reliance on special effects and action sequences overshadowed the emotional depth that he had initially aimed to portray. Critics pointed out that while the visual spectacle was impressive, it lacked the substance that audiences had come to expect from a film featuring a leading actor like Khan. This disconnect, Sinha admitted, was a significant factor in the film's mixed reviews and underwhelming box office performance.

The Director's Regret

In hindsight, Sinha expressed regret over certain creative decisions made during the production process. He felt that the film's narrative could have benefited from a more focused approach, rather than attempting to cater to a wide audience. "I should have trusted my instincts more," he reflected, acknowledging that the pressure to deliver a blockbuster led to compromises that ultimately diluted the film's impact.

Sinha also mentioned the importance of collaboration in filmmaking, emphasizing that while he had a talented team around him, the sheer scale of Ra.One made it challenging to maintain a cohesive vision. He recognized that the film's ambitious nature, while admirable, may have contributed to the loss of control he experienced as a director.

Lessons Learned

Despite the challenges faced during the making of Ra.One, Sinha has taken the experience as a valuable lesson in his career. He emphasized the importance of staying true to one's vision and the need for clear communication among the creative team. The director has since applied these lessons to his subsequent projects, focusing on storytelling and character development over spectacle.

In conclusion, Anubhav Sinha's reflections on Ra.One serve as a reminder of the complexities of filmmaking and the delicate balance between ambition and execution. While the film may not have achieved the success he envisioned, it remains a significant chapter in his career, shaping his approach to future projects and reinforcing the idea that every setback can lead to growth and improvement in the art of storytelling.
