“Charrul Malik on World Sleep Day: Prioritizing Sleep is Vital for a Healthy Life”

However, as actress Charrul Malik reminds us, sleep is crucial for our overall well-being and should be a top priority.

On World Sleep Day, Charrul emphasizes the importance of getting sound sleep at night. She acknowledges that achieving this is not always easy, especially in today’s society where career-oriented individuals are constantly under stress. As she says, “It happens with me as well. Sometimes, if I take a nap in the afternoon, I am unable to sleep at night. I never used to sleep in the afternoon but because of the schedule, I end up sleeping in the afternoons because I have to work at night. I don’t think anyone sleeps for 8 hours straight without any issues. We all are sleep deprived.”

Charrul’s observations are backed by research that shows that sleep deprivation is a global problem. According to the World Sleep Society, one-third of the world’s population suffers from sleep problems, and nearly 60% of people in developed countries report not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause a range of health issues, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and depression.


Charrul goes on to explain that getting less sleep often leads to many problems, both in the short and long term. She says, “I think I sleep for 5-6 hours. I can manage right now with that amount of sleep. But the after effects are not good. Right now, we are young, we won’t understand but once we turn 55-60 years old, we will understand this. We should sleep well and charge ourselves like we charge our phones. We have to take care of ourselves.”

So, how can we prioritize sleep and ensure that we get enough rest each night? Charrul offers several helpful tips. First, she suggests that we put aside any mental baggage we may have before going to bed. This means clearing our minds of any worries or stresses from the day and focusing on relaxing and preparing for sleep.

She also recommends practicing relaxation techniques like meditation, drinking lukewarm milk, or massaging our feet with mustard oil and wearing cotton loose socks. These simple practices can help calm our minds and prepare our bodies for sleep. Additionally, going for a light walk after dinner or hitting the gym in the evening can also help us get a good night’s sleep.

Charrul also emphasizes the importance of having a light dinner and avoiding foods that can cause bloating or indigestion. She advises against consuming rice, tea after food, ice cream, cheese, or dahi, as these can all interfere with our sleep.
